Heritage, Craftsmanship & the Art of Renewal
Smaraniya was born in a small workshop in Mumbai's historic Chor Bazaar neighbourhood, where antique furniture lined the streets and stories were embedded in every grain of wood. Our founder, Arjun Srivastava, had spent years watching magnificent pieces deteriorate simply for want of care and expertise.
Trained in traditional cabinetmaking at the Sir J.J. School of Art and with apprenticeships in England and France, Arjun returned to Mumbai with a mission: to build a team of craftsmen devoted to preserving India's antique furniture heritage.
Today, Smaraniya employs twelve master craftsmen, each with deep expertise in specific periods and techniques. Over 500 pieces have passed through our workshop — each one leaving with a renewed soul and a new story to tell.
We use traditional hand techniques — hide glue, French polishing, hand-cut dovetails — that honour the original maker's intent.
Every restoration is documented and disclosed. We provide full reports on work carried out and the piece's provenance.
Restoration is inherently green. We extend the life of beautiful objects, reducing demand for new production and landfill waste.
Each piece is researched thoroughly. We understand the period, style, and techniques of the original craftsmen before we begin.
We work closely with clients throughout every project, ensuring the result meets both our exacting standards and your vision.
We refuse to rush. Every piece leaves our workshop only when it meets the standard we would be proud to display in our own homes.
Each member of our team brings decades of experience and a genuine love for the craft.
